Creepy Crawly Pajamas

jams10 (853x1280)

My goodness, it feels like I’m pulling from the sewing project vault for this post. These pajamas were sewn up in the spring and have been in pretty heavy rotation, even during the summer. I’ve seen so much of them it’s hard to believe I never got around to posting about them. But they’re just too loved by my son for me to skip posting them. And besides, it’s been pretty quiet around here lately, so let’s start with some catching up.

Creepy Crawly Jams, sewn by fromwholecloth.com, Titchy Threads patterns

These pajamas were made using two patterns by Titchy Threads, the Rowan Tee pattern and the Fancy Pants Leggings pattern, and are sewn up in a comfy 100% organic cotton knit interlock. I purchased the fabric (Teagan White for Birch Organic Fabrics, Acorn Trail, Knit, Bugs Gold) with the intention of sewing up pajamas during the Spring 2015 Kids Clothes Week (they would have been so perfect for the “wild things” theme). But I fell short of my goal, and hence, no KCW jammies.

The thing is, I had told my son about the pajama plans. And he mentioned that he could wear them on “Pajama Day,” a special day planned near the conclusion of his pre-kindergarten program last school year. But it was a casual conversation, and he also mentioned that he might choose his store-bought superhero PJs instead. So, no big plans, nothing set in stone. And I was kind of hoping that his PJ expectations had been forgotten.

Wrong, mama! Of course. I mean, how could I not see that coming, right?! So, two nights before the highly anticipated Pajama Day, he expectantly asked if his new PJs were ready. Gulp. And, not being one to shy away from late night sewing, I truthfully responded, “they will be!”

And they were. And he wore them proudly. And I sighed a big sigh of relief. Mission accomplished.

I fully acknowledge that my son is completely biased when it comes to my sewing ability and treasures just about every item I make him. And that is why I love him. KIDDING!! Well, not entirely. He really is my biggest fan when it comes to my creations, and that is one of the millions of reasons I love him. He’s my sewing ego boost.

The last minute nature of this project meant that I didn’t have a chance to snap photos before they were put to their first use. We finally rectified that this week. As a newly minted kindergartner, my son has been so wiped out each afternoon that it was easy to persuade him to put his PJs on before dinner so we could do a photo shoot. And he suggested an outdoor photo shoot would be a good match for the creepy crawly bug theme of the printed fabric. Pajama modelling in the front yard — yes, awesome!

These patterns and this stable knit were easy to work with. I definitely see more pajamas and more knit t-shirts in my sewing future.  I finally broke out my double needle for the first time to finish the hems on the top. I love the more professional finish it provides, although I admit I need more practice. The thread has already broken in one spot along the front, bottom hem. Grrrr. I’ve since read that wooly nylon thread for the bobbin thread helps prevent breakage with the double needle – next time!

It also provides for a ribbed waistband and ribbed ankles (although alternates are provided in the pattern, as well). I sewed the top and the bottoms up without any alterations from the pattern and was very happy with the results.

When we moved the photo shoot inside – “because you usually wear your jammies in bed, mom” – I really thought he was going to fall asleep on me.

Insert thumb, cue the heavy lids. Good niiii-iight! I may have even begun to daydream about all that could be accomplished if the kids were both in bed by 5:30 p.m. Tsk, tsk, bad mommy.

But then, he found his second wind.

Very authentic.

And in case you are curious, Pajama Day is celebrated by allowing the students to wear their PJs to school, and then it’s lights off while they “camp out” in the classroom, listening to a “bedtime” story, enjoying popcorn and looking at the constellations on the ceiling (a la a night sky project they completed leading up to the PJ day). It really was a sweet and special experience for them.

And much better experienced in new, handmade pajamas, no doubt!

Crazy Horse: KCW Sewing Geranium Top

This is my little crazy horse, my Daisy horse. Crazy Horse was known for being ferocious in battle; she’s ferocious in her own way. Small in stature but big in spirit. And louder than anyone her size has a right to be. She’s also going through a phase (is it still appropriate to call it a phase when it’s been about 9 months?!?) where she doesn’t think bedtime applies to her. We do the whole bath, book and bed routine, and then she stays up for a couple more hours engaging in vigorous conversation with her toys, singing songs of her own composition, and occasionally sneaking downstairs to see what Mommy and Daddy are doing. And she’s still typically the first one to wake in the morning.

She just turned three and a half, which means she’s big now. “I was little when I was three, but now I’m big.” Watch out, world!

Now, I know a lot of girls are c-c-c-crazy about horses. I went through my own horse-crazed period when I was little. I even asked for a horse for Christmas, and my Mom patiently and devoid of sarcasm responded something along the lines of, “Well, in case Santa Claus can’t bring you a horse, is there something else you’d like for Christmas?” I wanted to know why Santa wouldn’t bring me a horse, that’s what! Well, I never did get that horse, and in fact I forgot all about my previous horse obsession until I started to see so many horse-themed fabrics making their debut over the last year or so. Daisy is actually not horse crazy – yet. Transformer, cheetah and rhino crazy, yes. But this horse fabric has been staring at me from my fabric stash for a while and I couldn’t resist using it any longer.

The theme for the Spring Kids Clothes Week (April 20-26) was “Wild Things” and I fittingly sewed this wild mustang top for Daisy. I sewed a bunch of other things, too, but then she and I both were hit hard by a stomach bug that week and I never posted any of my projects. I am seriously backlogged on posting about recent sewing projects, so I’m trying to catch up. Actually, I’m grateful for a little reprieve from sewing because, to tell the truth, I’m feeling a little sewed-out after a marathon sewing session at the end of last week. (More on that later!)

This top is the Geranium Dress/Top Sewing Pattern by Made by Rae. I’ve made the dress option of that pattern before both here and here. It’s an uncomplicated sew and produces such a reliable result. Except that I forgot to mark the buttonholes when I cut my fabric, and then guesstimated on their location and they ended up a little too far from the edge. It made the bodice a bit tighter, but still wearable. Whoops!

I’m sad to report that lately I’ve been getting a lot of push back from Daisy about wearing a dress. “No, Mommy. Not a dress today. I want a shirt!”, she’ll insist in the morning. I guess I’ve always known this day was coming, since I’ve heard so many stories about little girls deciding very early on that they want to call the shots on their apparel. I applaud her independence, but it’s still kind of breaking my heart. And so, I sewed up a shirt that is about as close to a dress as I can get! “You made me a horse dress?” “No, no, it’s a shirt! A horse SHIRT!!”

The fabric is Melody Miller’s Mustang in Aqua for Cotton + Steel. The feel of this fabric is wonderfully soft – especially considering it is quilting cotton. It feels soft like favorite shirt status soft.

When I decided on the pattern and fabric for the top, I also decided to make her some fun pants to complete the outfit. Big oops on my part – they are way too big on her right now! Rather than calling this a sewing fail (even though I was dying to see her wear the top and bottom together), I’m considering myself super organized for having a leg up on her fall wardrobe. How’s that for a positive spin!

Blog Tour: Infinite A-line Dress by Whisk’em

Infinite A-Line Dress, pattern by Bonnie Wiscombe of whiskem.com, sewn by fromwholecloth.com

To infinity and beyond!

Sorry, Buzz Lightyear, but this post has nothing to do with space exploration. But it has everything to do with a brand new girl’s dress pattern – the Infinite A-line Dress – by Bonnie Wiscombe of whisk ’em. Oh boy, was this pattern fun to sew!

Welcome to stop #1 on the Infinite A-Line Dress blog tour! I am honored that Bonnie asked me to join her blog tour for this extremely versatile new pattern – thank you, Bonnie! This is Bonnie’s first sewing pattern, and it’s loaded with options to create seemingly endless versions of an A-line dress and really allow your inner designer to take the reins.

Infinite A-line Dress by Bonnie Wiscombe, sewn by fromwholecloth.com

For my first attempt at the pattern, I selected Version D, which includes an empire bodice with ruffles. This version has a bit more going on than the simple, classic triangle-shaped silhouette, but don’t worry, the traditional A-line shape is included among the pattern versions. I chose Version D in particular because it made me think of this dress I found on Pinterest a few weeks ago and have been hoping to replicate for my daughter.

Infinite A-Line Dress, pattern by whiskem.com, sewn by fromwholecloth.com

I sewed the dress in a size 3 based on my daughter’s chest measurement. Her measurement was exactly equal to the maximum for size 3. I was tempted to size up just to extend the period that the dress would fit, but I wanted the dress to fit well this summer, so I stuck with the size 3. The bodice fits perfectly.

Infinite A-line Dress, pattern by Bonnie Wiscombe, sewn by fromwholecloth.com

The assembly of the bodice for Version D was very straightforward, and I appreciate that it is more detailed than simply adding a flutter sleeve to an armhole. The ruffle piece is attached along the entire front and back bodice piece. Don’t get me wrong – I love me a pretty flutter sleeve – but this bodice and ruffle design provides for a more structured and sophisticated look. It also prevents the ruffle from becoming too floppy, since it has support along the entire bodice.

The additional seaming along the bodice is also the perfect invitation to add trim! I could not resist adding red ric rac trim along the bodice/ruffle seams. Piping or mini pom pom trim would be awesome as well. Ah, so many possibilities. I also used a red metallic embroidery thread for my topstitching for another pop of color.

The next thing that you need to hire a qualified, English native viagra online cheapest writer. Aside from adding the trim, my only variation from the pattern instructions was to make my back button loop out of the main fabric, as opposed to using elastic cord. This was simply based on personal preference; I think the fabric loop looks dressier. I cut a piece of fabric about 8″ long by 1″ wide; pressed the fabric in half lengthwise, and then folded in both the lengthwise raw edges to meet the center fold in order to conceal them and pressed again. Then I topstitched the piece closed along the lengthwise open edge. I ended up cutting a few inches of extra length off the loop once I’d sewn it in place on the bodice, so 8″ was way more than enough length to work with.

The dress is a good reminder that I need to use solid color fabrics more frequently in my sewing. I am so often drawn to the gorgeous prints and beautifully illustrated designs featured in quilting cottons, and they can be wonderful choices for making cute children’s apparel. But for this dress I used a Robert Kaufman chambray in indigo (to be honest I thought the color would be darker than it is – I purchased it online so I didn’t see it in person before purchasing). After reading so many other bloggers raving about chambray for apparel sewing, I finally made the plunge and I am a complete convert. It was amazing to work with and the soft drape leaves quilting cotton in the dust. I also feel that the solid color allows the details of the dress to stand out more. It’s worth mentioning that the softness of the chambray means that the ruffle is not quite as perky as it would be with quilting cotton. I prefer the more subdued ruffle.

I already have plans to sew another version of this dress pattern. With so many options, and opportunities to really personalize the look to your own taste, this pattern is bound to be in rotation for a while!

Vacation Wear: Nelle Dress and Moon-ish Pants

raspberry Nelle Dress sewn by fromwholecloth.com

We’re nearing the very end of March and it still feels like winter around here. Grrrr. I am past the cabin fever; past being depressed over the snow, snow and more snow. Now I’m just COMPLETELY ANNOYED. I used to be someone who enjoyed winter. This year is forcing me to rethink that mindset.

Thank goodness we were lucky enough to escape last month to sunny Florida for a family vacation. I was just so happy to be somewhere warm and sunny, where being outside felt good rather than numbing. It was heavenly to feel the sun on my skin.

In joyful anticipation of a sunny vacation I made big plans at the beginning of February to sew up a handful of items for the warmer weather. But it turns out that spending your nights sitting on your butt watching Netflix is not very conducive to sewing, so my big plans were quickly whittled down to two items made two nights before our departure. My daughter scored big, and my hopes for a new beach cover-up have been shelved until summer — assuming we actually get a summer and we’re not stuck in permafrost tundra forever.

The sundress was made using the The Nelle dress pattern by brownie goose. I love this pattern. I actually have several Nelle dresses in my Etsy shop because it’s so much fun to sew. It doesn’t require yards and yards of fabric and is so versatile; wear it alone or pair it with pants or leggings. I have had that dress fabric for almost four years now. It was the very first fabric I ever purchased when I started sewing, and I still love it as much as I did back then. The color makes me think of black raspberry ice cream. I have just enough of it left to maybe make her a skirt next year.

The pants are my attempt to hack the upcoming Moon Pants Sewing Pattern from Made By Rae. Rae’s moon pants were among the fabulous sewing projects highlighted in Issue 3 of Stylo Magazine, and I have been eagerly awaiting the actual pattern. After their magazine debut (and before sewists went crazy over the design and *demanded* that Rae create a pattern), Rae mentioned on her blog that the pants could be sewn by making some alterations to her Parsley Pants Sewing Pattern. And so, I attempted just that. I’m happy with the results, but I still can’t wait to purchase the real pattern.

Vacation was great. Not in the big, fancy, expensive, once in a lifetime way that vacations can become, but rather in the way that I felt like I was able to hit the re-set button. In past years we’ve made trips to zoos and other attractions while on vacation, running here and there for oohs and aahs, but this trip was different. We didn’t try to cram each day full of trips and big experiences, but instead spent our days playing at the beach, swimming in the pool, being outdoors, being together, heading to bed early, recharging.

Before vacation I was feeling kind of ambivalent toward many of the things that typically appeal to me. Winter doldrums, I guess. This vacation, in its simplicity and lack of reliable internet connection, was more about having time to think. To enjoy each other’s company. To take a deep breath and not have to rush off to the next thing. Of course, that also leaves me wondering why we allow “regular” life to move so far from that ideal.

So, now that those of you who did not have a winter vacation are ready for me to shut the heck up…

Is she still talking about her vacation?!!

I will!

Here’s to Spring and all of us feeling recharged and ready for something simple and good!
