Twofer: Elsie Marley Creative Assignment

About a week ago I signed up to participate in the latest Creative Assignment hosted by Meg at elsie marley. Meg is the creator of Kids Clothes Week, and more recently has launched a series of “creative assignments”, so clearly she has a knack for inspiring community projects.

Her creative assignments are just that – she assigns a theme and provides (minimal) instruction and then off you go to create something in response. Let the assignment take you wherever you want. If the assignment tickles your creative spirit, all the better.

The theme for this particular creative assignment is “twofer” – two things stuck together. Each participant had to contribute one word, and then Meg used a random generator to create pairs of words for each participant to use for their twofer assignment.  My pairing:

spoon+sky.svg

I was quite happy that Meg’s instructions included the following assurances:

Don’t over think this. Don’t make a 1:15 scale model or a full size quilt! But do make something, even if it is just a sketch. Don’t be self conscious, please. Your idea might be crap, my idea might be crap, but that’s perfectly fine. That crap idea? It might just lead to a super fantastic one down the line.

The first thing that came to mind when I received my word pair was: a spoon being used to eat the sky – like clouds that look like ice cream scoops, and a spoon digging in. But then that seemed so literal and obvious to me. So what did I do? Nothing, until today when the assignment is due.

And then a couple of ideas struck me, and I couldn’t decide which to choose. So you’re getting a twofer of (hopefully) creative responses:

Kid’s Clothes Week Summer ’14: Project 2

My little guy is happy.

Let's Drive Shorts by fromwholecloth.com

There are a few things I can solidly count on to make him happy. Pumpkin-flavored baked goods and matchbox cars figure heavily in that mix. So I pretty much knew that car, truck and motorcycled-themed fabric was going to be a hit.

This fabric is “Retro Rides” by Premier Prints. I purchased it about a year ago on fabric.com and it’s been sitting in my fabric stash just waiting for a good project. Confession: it’s really not intended for apparel sewing. It’s a medium-weight cotton duck. And the manufacturer recommends not drying the fabric; air drying only. Well, we’ll just have to see how this works out.  How long before you think I forget and put them through the dryer?

Unlike yesterday, today the photo shoot gods smiled down on me and I scored a very willing model. Eli was busting out his modeling moves. Of course, most of his modeling moves were better suited for a runway, so I was bouncing around to keep up and strongly suggesting that we take a couple photos standing still — very still. The concept of stillness means something so different to children and adults.

Ah, stillness. A parent can only dream. We’ve been struggling for so long with keeping Eli in his seat during a meal. I honestly don’t think he’s ever managed it since he left the highchair. He always finds some reason to get up and move. And even when he’s sitting, it  is rare that his bottom is completely on the seat. I was thinking about this during dinner tonight when I asked, for what felt like the 100th time, for him to sit “all the way” in his seat. Perhaps I need to develop a pants pattern that accommodates a big magnet in the seat of the pants, and a corresponding magnet for his chair.

That’ll stick him.

So I made me some pants: Plinka Pants

Plinka1

Sometimes inspiration strikes at the oddest moments.

For a while now I’ve wanted to return to a regular yoga practice and recently tried a new studio.  Settling in for class, I spied some fantastic pants a couple rows ahead of me. What grabbed my attention was how much they were not like typical yoga pants. They were a deep russet color, wide-legged and really flowy. They appeared to be made from linen or voile — something very lightweight. Definitely not your basic black fitted lycra yoga pant. And henceforth I became obsessed with the thought of soft, flowy yoga pants.

And, so, did I make myself yoga pants? Nope. I guess this is a case where the end product strayed a bit from the genesis of my inspiration. My pants are wide-legged, relaxed and linen, but not really yoga class attire. I’ve worn them out a few times now and I think they are a unique and stylish summer option. Especially helpful for covering mosquito-bitten legs, while keeping you cool on warm days.

Plinka2

I don’t recall exactly the path that led me to these pants, but it started with scrolling through linen fabric choices online late one night, and then somehow stumbling onto some great patterns by designer Tina Givens. I purchased some patterns (more reveals coming soon!) and also downloaded the free pattern for her Plinka Pants.

These pants were my introduction to Tina Givens. I’m still wondering how I’d never heard of her. I love that her designs are so unfussy but still feminine. And they leave plenty of room for you to add your own design elements and embellishments. I’m giving myself way too much credit here, but I felt a certain kinship with her design vision. Scrolling through her pattern gallery I was struck by how similar some of her designs are to the items I sketch for myself or rip from magazines or simply imagine wearing.

The sewing was easy but the instructions are pretty light (about one page of instruction!). I guess I have become spoiled with the high level of direction, photographs and diagrams included by most of the independent pattern makers I have sewn. It’s not that the techniques used in these pants were tricky, but I think it would definitely be helpful to have a good understanding of the techniques involved, as well as the basics of constructing clothes, so that you can follow along with the limited directions. This is not the kind of pattern that includes instruction on the individual techniques needed to complete the pattern. I couldn’t for the life of me understand the description for the final step of attaching the ruffle along the pant hem. I just attached it the way I typically add a ruffle trim, even though I think a different method was being described.

The only advice I would share about the pattern (and I think this might apply generally to TG patterns, since it was also relevant to the next TG pattern I tried) is that her style is very relaxed — there is nothing fitted about these items!! — and depending on your personal comfort level with additional fullness in your clothing (i.e., is this a romantic, flow-y look, or do I look like I’m smuggling something in my clothes?), you may want to reduce some of that fullness. I sewed a size small (her pattern sizes cover a wide range), altered the pattern to shorten the length to about mid-calf and reduced some of the fullness in the legs. Yep, this is the reduced fullness version! These are very wide-legged pants – kind of a ruffled hem version of a harem pant. As one of my friends remarked, “It looks like a skirt, until you start walking.”

I tried taking some photographs holding the pant legs out to their fullest width to make my point about the fullness, but the result was so ridiculous looking I just couldn’t post them. We are in the middle of toilet-training my daughter, and the way I looked in the photos reminded me of the way my daughter walks when she’s had an accident and wants her pants off ASAP. Actually this whole photography session was humorous because I was using the self-timer on my camera and running back and forth taking shots and posing, trying to accomplish it all within the 24 minute window I had while the kids watched a television show On Demand.  And any typical self-consciousness about having my picture taken was compounded by the fact I was paranoid my neighbors could watch my silly sprint-filled photo shoot on the porch.

These pants are super comfortable. And the linen-rayon blend fabric I used is perfect. It provides a nice drape but doesn’t wrinkle the way pure linen does. And, I scored it on sale at Jo-Anns, which made these pants a super bargain considering the pattern was graciously provided for free on the Tina Givens website.

Plinka6

I’m actually starting to re-think my statement that these pants wouldn’t work for yoga! They are so relaxed, not restrictive in the least. Or maybe I’ve been confusing them with pajamas — nice bed head, huh?

Happy start to summer!

Kids Clothes Week Spring 2014: Planning Process

Let the spring sewing begin! Kids Clothes Week Spring 2014 has arrived.

kid's clothes week

I have not sat down at the sewing machine yet today, or even cut into a bit of fabric. I have at least selected fabrics and a couple patterns for my to-do list. I’m getting the feeling it might be more of a wishful thinking kind of to-do list. We’ll see how much I accomplish. Most of my sewing is for my children anyway, so it is like a year-long Kids Clothes Week around here.

Since I don’t have any completed sewing projects to reveal today, I thought I might at least reveal my hopes for this KCW and a bit of my planning process. If you’re itching to see some homemade greatness, you can check out the kids clothes week blog to see what others have revealed on day one: kcw april 2014.

This is the first KCW to have a theme — “Mini Me”.  The thought is that participants will sew something for their child(ren) that is based on an outfit of their own, or repurpose some of their adult clothing into something for their child, etc. No hard rules, very open to interpretation.

Honestly, the theme had me stumped for a bit. First, I wasn’t particularly keen on having a mini me following me around. I’m not that big into the matchy-matchy thing between my two children, and have never even considered doing it with my child. Second, I really like my children to dress like kids, not like little adults. But then I took a big ol’ chill pill and decided I was being waaaay too literal about the theme.

Overall dysfunction as well as the wastage of skeletal muscles is the two most independent predictors of mortality amongst the patients suffering from COPD. slovak-republic.org ordine cialis on line These products are safe for many people the idea of lowered desire, less frequent sex, and an inevitable slide toward the platonic, characterise the picture of what old age brings to their sex lives. slovak-republic.org cipla tadalafil 10mg It order levitra provides freedom from aging effects, better immune system, inner confidence, beauty-benefits, relief from stress and focus on lovemaking. Erectile dysfunction is a popular Ed issue that is seen to affect most of purchase viagra from india the men.

Since motherhood, I feel like I’ve pretty much shoved fashion out of my wardrobe and replaced it with comfort. So much easier to maneuver around the park, or scoot around in the playroom, or dance and sing in our mom & me music class when I’m dressed comfortably and not worried about my clothes. At the same time, it’s also kind of depressing how uncool my clothing choices have become … but that’s a topic for another day. Back to KCW – I’ve decided my take on the “Mini Me” theme is to create some items for my children that are as comfortable as my favorite, go-to comfy clothes.

My goals for sewing for Daisy this KCW: comfy leggings or knit pants, and a comfy cardigan. I have an old knit shirt that I may try to incorporate into the pants. For the cardigan, I plan on using the Slouchy Cardigan pattern by heidiandfinn; it has similar lines to a cardigan that I wear all the time.

My goals for sewing for Eli this KCW: [blank]. Yikes. I feel like I haven’t sewn him anything in quite a while. He has been asking for some sweatpants, so perhaps I can work that into this week.

In terms of process, I have no genius insight to share. Typically I use KCW to focus on what is missing from or would nicely compliment what my kids already have in their closets. The “Mini Me” theme muddles that a bit for me this time around. I do enjoy sketching out ideas for sewing projects. I am no artist when it comes to drawing, but it helps me to visualize my intended end result, walk through the various steps in constructing the garment, determine what patterns might be most helpful, and consider different features to play around with or embellishments to add to an item.

If all goes as planned, later this week I’ll be able to turn the sketch above into an actual pair of pants. Voila – sewing magic!
