KCW Fall 2013: Day 2

RedPantsHeader

Let’s paint the town red, shall we? I’ve mentioned before that my son’s favorite color is red. Still is.

During the Celebrate the Boy sewing challenge earlier this year, I made him red shorts, by request.  He has outgrown the shorts, and we are headed into cooler weather, so his special request for KCW was — you guessed it — red pants!

How could I deny him?

Behold the power of red pants.

They might make you want to dance. (Note to David Bowie: consider changing lyrics to put on your red pants, and dance….)

Or, climb the walls.

I used the HOSH Pants pattern from LouBee Clothing, purchased here on Etsy. It’s intended to be a kids unisex pattern. I still can’t believe, however, that I made skinny jeans for my son. Even though I own a couple pairs, I kind of hate skinny jeans. And skinny jeans on men? No thank you. But I think I can tolerate skinny jeans on children. I think. I’m seriously considering re-making these pants for my son and cutting the legs just slightly wider. The pants have a flat front — no fly — so they make me a little uneasy that they look like red leggings on my son.

In order to tackle my leggings-look-alike concerns, I decided to add rear pockets. And not just plain old pockets, but arrow ribbon adorned pockets!

I found the ribbon at Jo-Ann’s while I was looking for embellishment for a different project. I think the pockets and the ribbon rescued the pants from potential legging-itis. The pattern doesn’t call for pockets, and they were an afterthought for me, so I ended up adding them to the previously constructed pants.

Okay, wait for it ….

(By the way, are you amused by the left/right designations on my son’s shoes? )

Despite my skinny-pants-on-guys issues, I loved sewing this pattern. Great instructions, no heavy lifting. And I love the bonus feature of an adjustable waistband! The waistband is sewn as a separate piece from the main pant pattern pieces and looks so nice. I used stretch denim (from Jo-Ann’s) and it was perfect for this project. I also trimmed the waistband seam using blue bias tape for an extra special finished look.

I have the feeling I will use this pattern many more times. I already have a few stretch fabrics set aside to make Hosh Pants for my daughter; and modified with a slightly wider leg, they will be a great fit for my son, too.

Okay, two projects completed for this KCW. That’s double my output from KCW Summer 2013. Let’ see if I can keep ’em coming!

A-Tisket, A-Tasket, a Baby Shower Basket

One of my favorite people is having a baby later this summer, and we celebrated her baby shower a couple weeks ago. I am so excited for her and love that sewing allows me to show that excitement with something handmade. Definitely made with love.

Did you guess that she’s having a boy?!

As part of my gift, I made this fabric basket using the Noodlehead Divided Basket Pattern by Anna Graham of Noodlehead. The pattern is well written and easy to follow along; and there are several variations, including adding pockets and different options for the handles. I’m a sucker for projects that are well-suited for mixing and matching fabrics. This is definitely a pattern I will use again.

The basket became a bit of a baby grab bag, filled with some items off her registry, a bunch of newborn-sized diapers, a couple tie-dyed onesies (have I mentioned my recent obsession with fabric dye? I dyed the basket handles, too!), and other helpful baby items. And, I didn’t even have to wrap it – bonus!

The basket seems like a natural fit for holding diapers in the early years, but I predict it will be useful for years to come. Can’t you see this on a bedside table filled with children’s books for eager little hands to peruse? Or used as easy transport for favorite things — I can picture my son moving all his plastic dinosaurs around from room to room in a basket like this. The Noodlehead site showcases some of the baskets Anna Graham has made from her pattern and suggests more potential uses, too. And her lovely fabric choices are always a treat to look at.

The Early Bird: New Baby Boy & Big Sister Sewing

More baby love (and more little packages) to share! My cousin’s family welcomed a healthy baby boy to the nest two months ago.  Two months ago — where the heck does the time go?

Well, I think we were all expecting it would be more like one month ago, but the little nugget was three weeks early. No problems or issues, just excited to be part of the world, I guess. And who can blame the early bird, especially when he has a lovely big sister to hang with.

I made a pair of baggy knit pants for my new second cousin using a grey and white geometric print I found a few months ago. The print doesn’t particularly scream “baby” but knits are so comfy and easy to pull on and off a baby that it seemed appropriate. I realize we’re all expectantly awaiting summer shorts weather, so I tried to size the pants to fit for early fall. They can always be good pants for air-conditioned indoors if they fit before then.

My favorite part is the leg cuff. I am a big fan of that off-white knit; it has a nice, cushy thickness and good feel. I originally wanted to make the pants the reverse of what they ended up being — solid leg and printed cuff, and a mini printed pocket on the bum — but I finally decided that perhaps white baby pants were not the smartest idea.

I typically like for there to be some sort of connection between what I’m sewing for the new baby and what I’m making for the older sibling. Coordinated colors or prints, perhaps. But once I chose the geometric grey print, I was a little stuck on what to use for big sis. So I went around and around with ideas, until finally I remembered this pink, white and grey bird family print I had in my fabric stash. A little grey for both of them, yet remarkably different in style.

So big sis gets a fun skirt (the same as the two-timing skirts I sell in my Etsy shop) made from two layers of woven cotton. I think the bird family print is charming, and kind of fits with the new baby/family theme. Of course, the bird families on the skirt have three or four little birds sitting on the branch, and I’d like to be clear this is not my attempt to pressure my cousins to keep adding to their brood!!  🙂

I wish my cousin and family happy days with their new son, and restful nights (as if!). A big warm welcome to the early bird!

Seeing Red Shorts: CTB Day #8

Seeing Red Shorts: CTB Day #8

I can only wish that it was shorts weather already! Nope, just getting a leg up on summer wardrobe needs. Originally my plan was for red pants. Red is Eli’s favorite color and the red pants I made him last winter received lots of wear. But then I decided that red shorts would be more fun this time around.

The shorts are based on Dana‘s tutorial for Kid Pants, and I just shortened them to shorts. Long shorts, actually. I kind of like boy shorts on the longer side, and NOT because they’re being worn below the butt! I used Dana’s tutorial for pockets, too. (Um, perhaps I should just turn this whole post over to Dana? Thank you!!)

I used a medium weight twill for the shorts, so they’re pretty substantial feeling. The pockets have a fun contrast lining with a street view print in cream and red (by Creative Thursday, The Red Thread collection).

I think my model has become a bit tired of the spotlight. I had to barter an episode of Dinosaur Train for this photo shoot, and even then I couldn’t convince him to leave his room for a few shots! Gosh, I hope he doesn’t complain to his agent about his working conditions; she likely won’t be too sympathetic.

And what does Daisy think about what’s going on around her? She is content pulling books from the bookcase and ignoring the photo snapping. I think she’s pretty confident that after two weeks of boys-only sewing there will be a new dress for her in the near future.
