Geranium Dress for a New Little Miss

BabyGeraniumCover_edited-1

Hurrah, a new baby in the family! The extended family — not my immediate family. “Phew!” says my husband. “Awwwwww…, ” says Eli, with disappointment. That boy asks for another baby on a regular basis. Cue the Rolling Stones: you can’t always get what you want, my dear son.

My cousin and her husband welcomed baby #2, a beautiful daughter, in January. Yes, yes, I know, it is now July, and I finally just shipped off a package of homemade goodies and officially welcomed her to the family.

I swore I was going to be more timely. I sewed up a minky and flannel blanket right after she was born. But it just didn’t seem exciting enough. I tossed around different pattern and fabric ideas but nothing really struck me. Months passed. Then I decided I needed to get in on the Geranium Dress goodness I’d been admiring on sewing blogs and in the Kids Clothes Week photo pools. The Geranium Dress Sewing Pattern is from Made By Rae, and the fabric I chose is from the Out to Sea collection by Sarah Jane for Michael Miller.  The “Sea Flowers” fabric is a small scale print of flowers and sea stars in pinks and blue and it is pretty busy, but I think it works really well in a smaller child’s size (in this case size 6 to 12 months — actually, I don’t think I indicated the dress size in the package I sent, so this post will have to do the trick!).

Aside from the usual greatness of Rae’s patterns and the detailed instructions, I love that the pattern easily accommodates different trims. I chose pale pink pom poms at the waistline, because, well, pom pom trim is awesome. Enough said. Rae has a post devoted to Adding Trim to the Geranium Dress

As much as I love the added element of pom pom trim, this part didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped. I didn’t give myself enough of a seam allowance on the waistline once the trim was added, and this necessitated closing the bodice lining by hand. Groan. Groan again. I learned how to sew on a sewing machine, so my hand-sewing skills could use some work. Sometimes, when I’m feeling super ambitious (a/k/a “fooling myself”), I declare loudly — in my head, so that no one can hear and I won’t really be held accountable — that I should spend an entire week’s worth of sewing time focused solely on hand-sewing techniques. I mean, I should do this. And I really do think it is important to be skilled and feel confident in the most basic form of one’s hobby, buuuuuut (insert whiny voice here) the sewing machine just makes everything so much easier, not to mention faster, and there are so many projects that just seem way, way more interesting than a week of sewing drills.

This is a poor picture, but you can see my totally amateur stitching by hand. Thank goodness this is the lining. Ain’t nobody gonna see it from the outside!

So, the dress was complete and ready to be sent off with the blanket (I swear there really is a blanket! Just no photos!). All set, right? Nope. I wanted to include a little something for the Big Bro. A couple more months passed. Really, now, this is just pathetic. A classic study in procrastination.

I knew exactly what I wanted to make — a little zippered pouch to house treasures of all sorts — and I had the fabric and the zipper and, well, apparently no motivation. I knew it wouldn’t take too long to complete so I kept pushing it aside in favor of whatever was grabbing my fancy at the time — like truly important things such as surfing the internet looking at outrageous vacation rentals in far off magical places where no one with children under the age of fifteen ever visits. Tick. Tock. Finally I had to sit myself down and have a little talk about responsibility and ambition.

Okay, actually there was no such talk, but I did finally get out of my own way and sew this cute little bag for a cute little guy. And all’s well that ends well. Or so I hope.

KCW Spring ’14: Woodland Leggings and Knit Cardigan

KCWSpring25

More Kids Clothes Week spring sewing. And more comfy knits that proved perfect for the park today.

Leggings details:

Fabric: Jay Cyn Designs for Birch Organics, knit, purchased from Fabricworm

Pattern: Go To Patterns leggings pattern, size 2T

Cardigan details:

Fabric: knit interlock from Jo-Anns

Pattern: Slouchy Cardigan by heidiandfinn, size 2T, modified with shorter cuff

WoodlandLeggings

The leggings were inspired by a post on the winthrop chronicles about leggings that the author, Sarah, made her daughter. I had been coveting this knit fabric on the Fabricworm site and musing about what to make with it. When I saw the leggings Sarah made, my mind was made up and I just had to have this fabric. Birch Organics has such wonderful woven and knit fabrics, and I especially love the designs by Jay Cyn Designs. I previously used a different design for a birthday girl’s horse skirt. Daisy and I have been playing “I Spy” with these leggings, trying to identify all the woodland animals it features.

KCWSpring24

The knit was very easy to sew, probably because it is not very stretchy and is a nice thick cotton that doesn’t slip when sewing. The size 2T in this leggings pattern is still slightly big on Daisy. I think the fabric will actually show a bit better when the fit is more snug.

Mom Cardigan

In a nod to KCW’s theme of “Mini Me”, the cardigan I made Daisy was inspired by the cardigan I wear all the time. All. The. Time. I recall when I purchased it in early 2009. I was in J.Crew looking for some clothes for an upcoming trip to St. Thomas with dear friends. I loved the cardigan (it’s a medium weight french terry) but thought it seemed pricey for what is essentially a sweatshirt. My husband convinced me to buy it, and I can unequivocally say I have gotten my money’s worth! It has served me well.

KCWSpring23

There is also another aspect of “Mini Me” to this cardigan. The fabric comes from a knit dress I made myself that was a HUGE miss. I accidentally purchased the knit dress pattern in the wrong size, then accidentally ripped it when opening the package (rendering it unable to be returned), and was too cheap to repurchase the pattern in the correct size. So, I tried scaling the pattern to my size, and it didn’t work — at all.  It was reminiscent of a hospital gown or a muumuu. At least I was able to reuse the fabric, although I wish I had taken a picture before cutting it up! The only problem is that I did not have enough fabric to cut one straight piece for the wide binding that runs along the cardigan. I actually had to piece three separate cuts together for the requisite 54 inch binding, and that resulted in an obvious and annoying seam on the left side of the binding at about chest level. Hence the little fuschia rectangle I attached in an attempt to cover the seam and add a little flair. Kind of a weak fix, but better than having to stare at that misplaced seam!

It was my first time using the cardigan pattern, and I liked it a lot. It was a relatively quick and easy project, with good instructions.

Daisy seemed really comfortable in her new clothes. She did, however, keep trying to button or close the cardigan front. I had to keep explaining that this sweatshirt does not close. Once she started running around the park, she didn’t give it another thought.

Two more days left in KCW. I’m not sure what’s up next for me. But my son is definitely quite aware that so far I have sewn for only Daisy. I may be guilted into making him some sweatpants after all.

KCW Spring ’14: Reptile Pants

Basic black pants?

Reptile Pants7

Guess again.

Reptile Pants2

Holy slithering stretch pants, Batman!

Reptile Pants3 fwc

This is my first contribution to Kids Clothes Week Spring 2014. In keeping with the Kids Clothes Week theme of “Mini Me”, I fashioned these pants for my daughter out of a knit shirt from my closet.

Reptile Shirt9

I think I wore this shirt all of three times. I scored it off the sale rack at Ann Taylor years ago, with the thought that it would be something a little funky to pair with a more conservative suit back in my lawyering days. It never worked just right though. It was calling out to be reborn as pants for Daisy.

Reptile Pants6

She is fascinated by the snake print. “Am I a snake, Mommy?”

Reptile Pants5

Reptile Pants4

I used the basic toddler sweatpants pattern by brindilleandtwig as my starting point. The pattern is super easy and lends itself well to modifications. It is a two piece pattern (one piece for the pant front and one for the pant back), which I thought would best accommodate using different fabrics for the front and back of these pants.

I cut the legs slimmer than the pattern calls for to achieve the style I had in mind. I also cut the front piece narrower than the back, so that the black fabric curves a bit more to the front.  The solid black fabric on the back of the legs is ponte roma from Jo-Ann’s. It doesn’t have a great deal of stretch, but the snake print fabric is a rayon/spandex blend that is super stretchy.

These pants are definitely different from anything in her closet. I’m happy with how they turned out — although I don’t have a clue what shoes to pair with them! I was initially concerned the snake print might be too precocious for a two-year old, but paired with her toddler belly these pants are way more amusing than sassy.

Frozen Fest: Elsa and Anna Capes

Elsa Cape Front

Are you a female under the age of twelve? Or a Mom to one? Then the names Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Hans are probably household names for you now. Are you experiencing irrepressible urges to build a snowman? Considering a reindeer as a pet? Daydreaming about how cool it would be to make slushies with the mere flick of a hand? Ah, yes, you’ve been bitten by the Frozen bug.

I’m a little late to the Frozen lovefest. We somehow avoided seeing Frozen in the movie theaters and I really wasn’t even familiar with the music from the movie until John Travolta’s Oscar’s ceremony flub drew extra (but deserved!) attention to Idina Menzel and the song “Let it Go”. Most of the adolescent world (especially the female population) was all abuzz about this movie, and I was meanwhile shrugging it off as “Eh, another Disney movie. We’ll rent it at some point. Maybe.”

My introduction to the movie came about in a rather unconventional way. Our neighbors have two young Frozen-obsessed daughters and when conversation turned to making an Elsa cape for the elder daughter, I found myself searching Google for images of Elsa and her snow queen attire and watching YouTube videos of “Let it Go” enough times that I found myself singing the refrain at random times throughout the day.

And, of course, what would Elsa be without Anna? After all, it was the perfect situation — I was sewing for two sisters!

Since making these capes, I have seen Frozen, twice. And since we own the DVD, I’m sure that number will keep going up! Confession: part of my hesitation in running out to the theater for this movie was a concern that it would be yet another “girl needs boy to rescue/love/fulfill her” story. No thank you. But … I was so happily surprised by this movie. A big high five to Disney.

This was a really fun project to sew. I even acquired a few new tricks along the way. Rolled edges using the serger, woo hoo! Now that is something worth changing the color of your serger thread for! (Yes, Mom, I just ended that sentence with a preposition. Although with my Catholic grammar school education, I nearly started to sweat with guilt just typing it.)

PS — It turns out that photographing a cape is harder than it seems. I forced cajoled my son into trying on the capes for a couple shots to give a sense of what they look like when worn. He was NOT happy, as evidenced by the puss on his face in the middle photo below. But I couldn’t let his hard work go to waste, so here you go!
